What type of glass is pool fencing?

For stunning views and uncompromising safety, tempered glass is the unequivocal standard for modern pool fencing. But what specific type and thickness are best? Here’s the breakdown:

All Tempered Safety Glass:
Type: The only suitable glass for pool fencing. Processed by intense heating and rapid cooling, making it 5-6 times stronger than regular glass.

Key Benefit: Breaks into small, relatively harmless granular pieces minimizing injury risk if impacted. Non-negotiable for safety compliance.

The Critical Factor:Glass Thickness
Standard Thickness: 12mm (approx. 1/2 inch) is the industry standard and minimum requirement in most regions for frameless or semi-frameless designs.

Why 12mm? Provides exceptional structural rigidity, wind resistance, and impact strength necessary for a secure barrier. Thinner glass (e.g., 10mm) is generally not recommended or compliant for pool safety fencing due to potential flex and vulnerability.

Height & Span: For taller panels (over 1.2m/4ft) or longer unsupported spans, 15mm or even thicker laminated/tempered glass may be specified by engineers for enhanced stability.

Optional: Laminated Tempered Glass:

Construction: Two layers of tempered glass bonded with a durable interlayer (like PVB).

Benefit: Offers even greater impact resistance and security. If broken, the interlayer holds the glass fragments in place, acting as a secondary barrier. Ideal for high-wind zones or premium installations.

Recommendation: Always specify certified 12mm thick fully tempered glass as the baseline for pool fencing. Ensure it meets local pool safety codes (e.g., AS/NZS 1926, ASTM F1346) and is installed by certified professionals using marine-grade stainless steel hardware for longevity and corrosion resistance. Prioritize certified safety over cost-cutting on thickness.
