In outdoor or humid environments, “rust resistance” is a core consideration when choosing railings. Materials meeting this standard mainly fall into three categories: inherently rust-resistant metals, metals relying on surface treatments, and completely non-metallic materials.
1. Aluminum Railing
Rust Prevention Principle: Aluminum forms a dense protective layer of aluminum oxide upon contact with air, preventing rust. The surface is typically powder-coated for added protection and a variety of colors.

AISI 316 (containing molybdenum): Must be used in coastal, high-salinity, or de-icing salt environments.
Note: The surface must be kept clean. Rough surfaces (such as brushed surfaces) are more likely to trap corrosion in harsh environments than polished surfaces.
3. Aluminum U-Channel Glass Railling
Rust Prevention Principle:
Frame/Base: The load-bearing and fixing frame structure (especially the U-shaped channel at the bottom) is made of aluminum alloy profiles. This ensures that the core structure connecting to the ground, columns, etc., possesses the natural rust-resistant properties of aluminum, fundamentally eliminating the risk of the main frame rusting.
Panel: Tempered glass itself does not have rust problems.
Core Advantages:
High-Performance Rust Prevention: The main load-bearing structure is made of aluminum alloy, making it ideal for highly corrosive environments such as coastal areas and swimming pools.
Safety and Drainage: The aluminum alloy bottom channel firmly holds the glass, and its design usually includes hidden drainage channels to divert rainwater and prevent water accumulation.
Modern Aesthetics: Visually dominated by glass, it is very transparent. Aluminum alloy components typically feature narrow lines and are available in black or metallic finishes, offering a modern and minimalist style.
Note: Ensure all screws and connectors are also made of stainless steel or aluminum to prevent galvanic corrosion.
Aluminum Alloy/Aluminum U Channel Glass Railling: Minimal maintenance required, usually only cleaning is needed.
Stainless Steel: Requires regular cleaning to maintain the passivation film; avoid using chlorine-based cleaners.
Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel: If the surface coating is damaged, the internal steel will rust, requiring inspection and repair.
Surface treatment is crucial: For metals, a high-quality powder coating or polished finish is key to long-term rust prevention.
In summary, for users seeking absolute rust prevention and minimal maintenance, aluminum alloy or composite materials are the safest choice. If the metallic feel and strength of stainless steel are desired, AISI 316 grade must be selected for harsh environments, and proper maintenance is essential.
