How thick should glass be for a railing?

For a glass railing, the thickness depends on how the glass is physically supported. Since building codes require glass railings to withstand a concentrated impact load of 200 pounds, the glass must be thick enough to prevent dangerous flexing or shattering.

The two main structural setups dictate the required thickness:

1. Framed Glass Railings (Supported by Posts)

In this system, metal posts (spaced 4 to 6 feet apart) and a top handrail bear the main load. As the glass panels act merely as protective “infill” rather than supporting the system, the glass can be slightly thinner.

- Standard Thickness: 10 mm (3/8 inch)

- Premium Upgrade: 12 mm (1/2 inch)

- Why use it: 10 mm tempered glass is the standard choice for residential use. It easily meets code requirements while keeping costs down. However, upgrading to 12 mm eliminates any subtle “rattle” or flex when people lean on the system, providing a more solid, high – end feel.

2. Fully Frameless Glass Railings (The Glass is the Structure)

In a frameless system, there are no posts or top rails. The glass panels are bolted directly to the floor using heavy metal clamps (spigots) or a base track shoe. Since the glass itself must absorb 100% of the weight and wind pressure, it has to be significantly thicker.

-Minimum Thickness: 12 mm (1/2 inch)

-Recommended/Standard: 15 mm to 19 mm (5/8 to 3/4 inch)

-Laminated Equivalent: 13.52 mm to 17.52 mm (Two layers of glass sandwiching a structural plastic interlayer).

-Why use it: Thicker glass is essential here to prevent structural deflection (bending). If the glass is too thin, leaning on it will cause the panels to sway dangerously.

Crucial 2026 Safety Note: Building codes for elevated installations (like second – story decks or high – rise balconies) strongly prefer laminated safety glass over single – pane tempered glass. If standard tempered glass breaks, it shatters into tiny pebbles and falls away, leaving a dangerous gap. Laminated glass (usually 13.52 mm thick) will crack but remain structurally intact within the frame, maintaining a safe barrier until replaced.
