Spacing is important. Canadian government guidance recommends patterns covering the glass surface with gaps of no more than 5 cm, while a 2026 field study found that exterior markers arranged at approximately 5.1 × 5.1 cm spacing were associated with a 67%–72% reduction in bird collisions in the tested buildings.
Design for Bird Safety From the Beginning
Bird-friendly design is easier to consider before a glass railing is installed than after repeated collisions occur.
For balconies and decks close to trees or other natural areas, homeowners can discuss bird-safe glass, patterned glazing, or exterior visual markers with their railing supplier during the design stage.
The goal does not have to be sacrificing the clean appearance of a glass railing. Carefully designed patterns can make the glass more visible to birds while maintaining the railing’s overall architectural appearance.
